Lilo being a weird kid made me feel less weird and alone. Kids need representation so they can have a better understanding of themselves and of the world around them. Lilo develops a found family with those who don't fit into society the same way many queer communities develop.
As a kid, these elements of Lilo and Stitch meant the world to me.
Why the change?
Unfortunately, we can blame the current political climate for this change. In a TikTok video that sees Camp highlighting comments and questions from fans, the filmmaker broached the subject of Pleakley’s human disguise and offered up the following response:
You may likeI have had people message me [asking,] ‘Why is Pleakley not wearing a dress?’ And I just want to say I tried.
There you have it, folks.
He wears different dresses and wigs and comes up with personas for each disguise. The fact that she was able to eventually find a community made me hopeful for the future, that I would one day find my own alien friends who didn't fit in like me. When the trailer debuted, fans criticised the new Lilo & Stitch for failing to depict Pleakley in drag and now director Dean Fleischer Camp has addressed the Pleakley discourse.

In the animated Lilo & Stich, Pleakley is presented as a male alien who loves feminine gender expression.
Now, director Dean Fleischer Camp has addressed that subject directly, and the answer is a bit heartbreaking.
Lilo & Stitch Addresses The Chances Of Seeing Pleakley Cross Dress
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but my suspicions from the Lilo & Stitch trailer have been confirmed.
However, in the live-action movie Pleakley uses technology to disguise himself as a himbo man and he doesn't wear dresses or any form of drag in the movie.
Throughout the film, he wears dresses and makeup in a bid to disguise himself when he is on Earth. Some have even called them “Lilo’s two dads.”
Yet, if you thought that answer was heartbreaking, wait until you see Dean Fleischer Camp’s delivery in his TikTok video, which is shared below:
I don’t think this switch will ruin the story of this live-action enhanced iteration.
If it wasn't for the original Lilo and Stitch, it may have taken me longer to be comfortable with my own identity and forms of self expression. Mike's expertise ranges from James Bond to everything Alita, making for a brilliantly eclectic resume. Would you have liked to see Pleakley in drag?

Throughout the film, Jumba and Pleakley disguise themselves as humans to fit in but Pleakley soon realizes that he enjoys dressing as a woman, despite being male. In a TikTok video, the director reacted to fan comments surrounding the trailer and one of them referenced the fact that Pleakley does not appear in drag. I tried." Dean also showed illustrations of a live-action version of Pleakley in drag that he presumably initially pitched to Disney.
Admittedly, it’s never outright discussed in either of the sequels or Lilo & Stitch: The Series. This is not Disney's first time doing this, as they erased two trans storylines from their cartoons Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Pixar's Win or Lose to avoid controversy earlier this year.
I loved how aliens were different from boring humans and how they felt like a community in every film that I watched with them in it.
