In LGBTQIA+ culture, the word “bear” has nothing to do with the wilderness. But, I’m glad I could represent my community. A lot of the mahi in breaking down that stigma, and de-colonising our people, is also connected to breaking down the stigma around having a bigger body – both as a Māori and as a queer person.

Then there’s the “wolf,” a lean, muscular, and hairy guy prowling with confident energy. It is also known as adipophilia The object of desire may be male or female. I also won Mr Bear New Zealand, and then went on to compete alongside the Australian states, and I ended up winning Mr Bear Australasia – both in 2017. That’s a big reason why I decided to run for Mr Gay New Zealand. According to Grindr, a “cub” refers to a younger or younger-looking bear-in-training, while an “otter” describes a slim or small-framed man who’s still hairy, often floating around bear circles. Chub as a term is more oft used with gay people as opposed to the heterosexual chubby chaser societies which are part of all humanity and all colours..

I did feel that lack of Asian representation.

What is a “bear?”

The first written use of “bear” in gay slang appeared in 1966 meeting minutes from a Los Angeles dance hall, noting the formation of a “bear club.” The term first appeared in print on July 26, 1979, in George Mazzei’s The Advocate article “Who’s Who in the Zoo?” to describe “hunky, chunky types reminiscent of railroad engineers and former football greats.”

In 1987, Richard Bulger and photographer Chris Nelson launched Bear Magazine, which helped solidify bear identity in print and inspired similar magazines.

He used seven horizontal stripes in brown, tan, gold, white, and black to represent the range of fur and skin tones within the community. Multiple round bumps on cell surface represent sites of assembly and budding of virions. Big Handsome Man, BBW..Big Beautiful Woman..

As America gets fatter and fatter, the use of the word "chub" should be becoming more prolificly used and i am quite certain it will!
