In a media landscape still saturated with binary gender tropes and rigid expectations, seeing male tenderness spotlighted is a radical act.

The two protagonists were perfect. His art gives space to the softness so often erased, and in doing so, validates a spectrum of queer expression.

As the “boys” series continues, it remains an evolving, evocative celebration of the male form—on queer terms. Hall toured with a live version of the show in 2016, shortly before taking over the role of cross-dressing powerhouse Lola in the Broadway run of the musical "Kinky Boots" that same year.

Boys, Bared and Beautiful

London-based photographer Walter Zak is turning heads and peeling back layers—literally and metaphorically—with his ongoing “boys” series.

Born April 4, 1985 on a farm in Arlington, Texas, Hall's first brush with fame came as a contestant on the ninth season of "American Idol" (Fox, 2002-2016), during which he reached the semi-final rounds in 2010 before being voted out of the competition. Memoirs of a Geeza, Dungarees, Clothes and Blow, My Sweet Prince. When the exposure afforded by the series failed to generate any stardom, Hall returned to Texas, where he began writing and directing in offbeat musical videos for YouTube.

I had an inkling of the selfless act that would happen before it was made clear. It’s masculinity as lived, questioned, and quietly adored.

For the LGBTQ community, projects like Zak’s are more than aesthetic—they’re affirmational. The NSFW project is a moody, intimate, and sometimes stark exploration of masculinity that challenges the rigid norms of what a man is “supposed” to look like.

A pretty erotic set of circumstances leading to a denouement that I should have seen coming - the religious are often twisted. We Are Dancers and L'Homme Jetée. But don’t expect hyper-polished male models flexing in oil—his vision leans more toward the gentle chaos of real life. Through his lens, Zak captures moments of raw emotion, stillness, and beauty, often featuring men in various states of undress—but always fully clothed in vulnerability.

Zak, who cut his teeth in fine art before pivoting into fashion, beauty, and still-life photography, brings that same artistic eye to his portraiture.

The films presented here were very variable in quality, storylines and acting ability.

    So hard to review

    This is a bit unfair.

His subjects aren’t just posing; they’re revealing. The boys in his series—fluid, fragile, sometimes fierce—speak volumes through subtle glances and soft limbs.

Published in titles like Vogue Italia, Tatler, and Gay Times, Zak’s work exists at the glittery intersection of queer sensuality and high art.

The other acceptable films raised this to a six. In 2016, Hall issued a "visual album" for "Straight Outta Oz," a new musical based on the classic musical with guest contributions by fellow "Idol" vet Jordin Sparks and singer Nicole Scherzinger. I hope the guys saved by Hansi Sturm, who was a real person, emulated his bravery. I'm afraid that some very good films are going to be dragged down by the utter bilge that most of the films consisted of.

    The bilge?

The high-powered representation led to an array of top-shelf assignments, including choreography duties on the single "Blow" for Beyonce, a commercial for MTV and serving as a judge on "RuPaul's Drag Race" (Logo, 2009- ). And an affirmation that it's not always the older guy who makes the running.

If it weren't for the two jewels, this would have got a two.
