The word was adopted into African American Vernacular English (AAVE) as early as the 1960s. Do you have any questions about them? However, in this context, we’re referring to the LGBTQIA+ meaning of the word “stud.” Let’s take a look at the history of the term and how it is used in the lesbian community.
What does “stud” mean to the LGBTQIA+ community?
“I am a black queer woman, and I don’t think the term “stud” is exclusive to our (black queer) community. They may also have short hair or an androgynous haircut. A butch woman is usually a white lesbian who dresses in a very masculine way. The massive pecs are simply phenomenal, such rich muscle fibre hiding under the smooth skin. As language evolved, “stud” gained a colloquial meaning, describing a man perceived as notably virile or sexually active.
Think short hair and flannel.
Stud lesbians, on the other hand, are typically black lesbians who dress in a masculine way. Stud lesbians are often drawn to femmes because of their feminine energy, and vice versa.

While “folks” is already gender-neutral, “folx” has been used in certain circles to indicate the inclusion of marginalized groups, like nonbinary and transgender individuals.

Although not all black-identifying lesbians identify themselves as studs, all studs are, without a doubt, black. Finally, studs tend to be attracted to femmes. A stud lesbian is often seen as the opposite of a femme lesbian, who is typically more feminine in their appearance and demeanor.

If you are a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, you have likely heard the term “stud” being used to describe masculine women. Another added, “I haven’t heard it outside of Black women or Latinas, though, at least not until recently.”
