It is an inherent aspect of who we are and cannot be changed or “fixed.”
The Spectrum of Sexual Orientations
Sexual orientation is not binary; it does not simply categorize people as “straight” or “gay.” Instead, it encompasses a wide range of identities. So I asked for a dance class, and she found one! At the same time, we emphasize the ways in which his mom has always encouraged him to be his fullest, freest self.
“She watches RuPaul’s Drag Race now—which is hilarious because she used to point to drag queens and say, ‘At least you’re not gay like that.’ But now she talks about every queen on the show like she knows them.
But her face looked worried, like she was also saying, ‘Whatever you do, don’t get a divorce.’”
Ian’s excruciating ambivalence about being separate from Jack has been a primary theme in our work from the start.
In our sessions, I started by directing the spotlight off of Ian and Jack and onto the more general theme of separation in Ian’s family, hoping this would help us understand Ian’s dread of independence.
I felt as if I was uncloseting myself as I shared examples of the double bind with my mother. This includes gay men and lesbian women.
The mother in his client’s case does it covertly. If you’re seeking further support or resources, consider reaching out to local LGBTQ+ organizations or mental health professionals who specialize in LGBTQ+ issues.
Remember, you are worthy of love and acceptance, just as you are.

Finding a supportive faith community can provide spiritual nourishment and acceptance.Personal Faith Journeys
Some individuals find that their faith evolves as they accept their sexual orientation.
That’s why it’s crucial to name subtle forms of social regulation when we see them, like that look in your mother’s eyes, so we can be aware of how we police ourselves and people we love, keeping them from being fully alive.”
I wish my therapist long ago had helped me name the silences between my mother and me, and the social systems that created them.
This could include attending church services, group Bible studies, or prayer meetings. In reality, sexual orientation is an inherent aspect of an individual, much like eye color or height. For example, a 2017 study published in the journal Psychological Reports found that “participation in activities that foster heterosexual behavior and attitudes can help reduce same-sex attraction.”
At the same time, it’s important to avoid places that trigger same-sex attractions.
This blog aims to encourage everyone to love themselves for who they are, debunking myths about “how to stop being gay” and emphasizing the importance of self-acceptance and mental health.
In this post, we will explore the concepts of sexual orientation, same-sex attraction, and identity. And as much as this gives us a context for Ian’s individual struggle with Jack, their cyclical conflict has remained uninterrupted.
But today, when Ian describes the double bind he’s in with his mother, we begin to clarify the emotional stakes that keep him running in circles in his marriage.
Mental health professionals and support groups can provide the necessary resources and care.
The Role of Religion and Faith
Religion can play a significant role in an individual’s life, and for some LGBTQ+ individuals, reconciling their faith with their sexual orientation can be challenging.
Positive Religious Communities
Many religious communities are becoming more inclusive and accepting of LGBTQ+ individuals.
Engaging with these communities can offer a sense of belonging with the gay lifestyle.
Participating in Events
Participating in LGBTQ+ events, such as Pride parades and social gatherings at a gay bar or your first sexual experience, can foster a sense of community and celebration of identity you may not feel with the opposite sex.
Advocating for Change
Advocacy plays a crucial role in promoting acceptance and equality for LGBTQ+ individuals and their sexual identity.
Raising Awareness
Raising awareness about LGBTQ+ issues helps educate others and challenge harmful stereotypes.
We internalize and enforce cultural expectations—about gender, sexuality, etc.—without realizing it. And that couldn’t be further from the truth. This awareness can help dismantle harmful stereotypes and promote understanding.
The Journey of Self-Acceptance
Self-acceptance is a crucial step in living a fulfilling and authentic life.
She meddled in our wedding plans a lot, making sure our outfits weren’t too garish. It’s important to debunk these myths to promote a more accurate understanding and foster acceptance.
Myth 1: Sexual Orientation is a Choice
One of the most pervasive myths is that people can choose their sexual orientation. A therapist can help individuals explore the underlying causes of their same-sex attractions and work through any issues that may be contributing to them.
This developed into a debilitating fear of taking up too much space in all my relationships, not just with my mother, and sometimes led me to self-destructive behaviors.
Fortunately, years of my own therapy and self-reflection helped me heal from this toxic entanglement with my mother.
But then she asked, ‘Are you sure you want to go?’ with a quivery voice, as if she was urging me not to do it.”
“Then, when I was 12,” he continues, “I didn’t realize our family computer recorded the sites we visited, and one day she showed me the list of gay porn sites I’d been to, and asked coldly, ‘What’s this?’ It was confusing, because she was always saying, ‘You can tell me anything,” and talking about gay people she knew in positive ways, as if she’d be okay if I came out.” Suddenly Ian tears up, showing how his mother’s mixed messages about his sexuality and, more generally, his gender nonconformity, have affected him.
As I take this in, I’m transported back to my early 20s when I described something similar to my therapist at the time, a straight man.
