At the inaugural prayer service, the Right Rev Mariann Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, made an appeal to US President Donald Trump to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ community and undocumented migrant workers.
Bishop Budde, in her 15-minute sermon, said, “Let me make one final plea, Mr President.
Her most recent public statement, urging President Donald Trump to show mercy to vulnerable communities during the 2021 inaugural prayer service, has sparked both praise and controversy.
A Voice of Compassion and Courage
Bishop Budde, 65, has served as the spiritual leader of Washington's Episcopal Diocese since 2011, overseeing 86 congregations and 10 schools across the District of Columbia and nearby Maryland counties.Apart from this, she has also served as the rector of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Minneapolis for 18 years before moving to Washington.
According to her bio, she is an alumna of University of Rochester, New York where she pursued Bachelors’ in History. “The Left’s hollowing out of the church is perhaps the single most dangerous change over the course of the last half-century,” Shapiro remarked on X.
Others also demanded accountability for what they saw as a politicised attack on the president.
Bishop Budde’s Reflection on Her Role
In interviews following the service, Bishop Budde expressed that her remarks were not intended to “call out” the president, but rather to offer a plea for compassion. “They are gay, lesbian and transgender children in Democratic, Republican, and independent families, some who fear for their lives", she added.
While defending the immigrants, Budde said, "The people who pick our farms, and clean our office buildings, who labour in poultry farms and meat-packing plants, who wash the dishes after we eat in restaurants and work the night shifts in hospitals - they may not be citizens or have the proper documentation but the vast majority of immigrants are not criminals", as reported by NDTV.
Her remarks came just a day after the Trump administration already issued several executive orders, including one taking back transgender rights and toughening the immigration policies in the country.
However, when a reporter asked Trump for a reaction to the sermon, he said, "Not too exciting, was it.
Representative Mike Collinscalled for her deportation, while conservative figures like Ben Shapiro and Turning Point USA's CEO condemned her sermon.
The former president himself responded to her comments on social media, describing the sermon as "boring and uninspiring" and accusing the Bishop of bringing her church into the political realm inappropriately.

Mariaan Edgar Budde is the spiritual leader for 86 Episcopal congregations and ten Episcopal schools in the Columbia district and four Maryland counties. She is also a passionate cyclist and enjoys spending time with her family, including her husband Paul, their two sons, and grandchildren.
The Bishop’s remarks, however, did not go without backlash.

While delivering her sermon, Budde spoke directly to Trump, who was seated in the front row with Vice President J.D. Vance and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, and his wife, First Lady Melania Trump.

She is the first woman to be elected to the role.
The EDW states she is a “passionate believer in the gospel of Jesus” and believes Christ calls all who follow him to “respect the dignity of every human being”.

Mariann is married to Paul Budde.
He rarely features on his wife’s Instagram – although he is obviously a keen cyclist.
She posted a picture in August 2022 of the pair of them with bikes against a mountain backdrop captioned: “One moment is a week with Paul Budde.”
This was just nine months after she thanked him for helping her get back on her bike.
She posted: “The scariest thing my father asked me to do when I was a kid was to get back on my horse after a fall.
For her, the message was simple: leadership should be grounded in compassion, and that mercy should extend to those most vulnerable in society.
